【Presentation of Songs】

(Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards)

【Presentation of Songs】Open work session & Post-talk

Songs – an open work session – allows interested individuals to witness the work of Thomas Richards on ancient song with artists who have been involved with him in daily practice long-term. Such practical work on ancient song was initiated at the Workcenter in 1986, and has been carried forward in continual development by Richards over the last 35 years. Such sessions serve those at work to help widen their knowledge of a “work on oneself” that can be carried out through a specific approach to song and action.

In this sense, Songs is not a theatre performance, it rather a kind of “theatre non theatre” wherein, as in certain old traditions, work on song and action goes together with an approach to the interiority of the human being and its potentialities. These work sessions become a means of awakening subtle aspects of inner experiencing, and can serve as a tool for the transformation of the artist’s perception and presence.

There will be a open dialogue session after the open work session, which will be their first in Asia since Thomas Richards closed the doors of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards in 2022.

Thomas Richards

Audience feedback

‘A very magnificent presentation.’

- Yang Yun Tao, Artistic Director of Hong Kong Dance Company

— Rolly Yeung Yeung, 舞者

‘Performing with vitality is a state of being. And this inner state is similar to the consciousness of Moksha of Yogi.

- Rolly Yeung Yeung, dancer

— Clarence Wong,

‘ It’s amazing to see such deep presentation, while wholly immersing, it still keeps posing me questions- what actually is my tool, what am I practicing, how to push practice to life, how to put life into practice, and what actually is the root of me.’

- Clarence Wong, Taichi teacher and practitioner
