【Workshop on Ancient Vibratory Songs】Master Class
In the late explorations of "Art as Vehicle" (1986-1999) by the late Polish theatre master Jerzy Grotowski and his designated heir Thomas Richards, they utilized "ancient vibratory songs" as a "tool" to stimulate and activate the body and consciousness, allowing energy to enter a state of fullness and even overflow. This training work requires a high level of focus, body awareness, and precision. It is difficult for spectators to grasp the full picture; one must immerse themselves personally to experience and explore it deeply.
Many theatre practitioners and members of the public have expressed great interest in the research of Grotowski and Thomas Richards. In light of this, we have specially invited Master Thomas Richards and his Theatre No Theatre team to Hong Kong in November during their Asian tour to host a three-night public workshop. Unlike the workshops last year and in April this year, this workshop will focus on the work on songs, and participants will not be required to create personal works. The participants will fully immerse themselves in the experience of this "vertical" energy flowing toward more subtle levels of energy.
This master class will guide each participant into the core essence of Thomas Richards's 36 years of research in the field of performing arts. Using African Caribbean and traditional African songs as materials, it will explore how to trigger the dynamics of individual and group performers through the melodies and rhythms of the songs, thus connecting the body's pulse with the music, entering a state of tension, and showcasing the flow of life.
As part of the three-year program "Across-Asia: Voices Unveiled," co-curated by Blank Space Studio and Thomas Richards and his Theatre No Theatre team, this event will also invite TNT resident artists from various countries who have worked with Thomas Richards for several years. We believe participants will experience a learning experience equivalent to the intensive training held at their base in Pontedera, Italy.
Date: Nov 20-22, 2024
Time: 19:30-22:00
Tuition fee: HK$2700
Class location:
Black Box, Tai Po Arts Centre
12 On Pong Road, Tai Po.
The number of places in this workshop is limited. Shortlisted students will receive an email notification.

(Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards),繼續發展葛氏指導他關於歌謠的工作。
【About Jerzy Grotowski & Thomas Richards & Theatre No Theatre】
In February of 2022, several ex-colleagues of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards founded the new Cultural Association, Theatre No Theatre, which has inherited its artistic existence directly from the Workcenter, since it is dedicated to supporting the new theatre research of Thomas Richards. In January of 2022, Thomas Richards, apprentice of Jerzy Grotowski, closed the doors of the Workcenter, of which he was Artistic Director for 23 years. Throughout its existence, the Workcenter was hailed as an outstanding and unique performing arts research centre, a place of constant experimentation and innovation.
The founder of the Workcenter, Jerzy Grotowski, is known for having revolutionised contemporary theatre, and is considered to be one of the most influential theatre practitioners of the 20th century. In his theatre work, Grotowski changed the way theatre practitioners conceive of the audience-actor relationship, staging and the craft of acting. Perhaps best known for his notion of «poor theatre», Grotowski’s practice extended beyond the confines of conventional theatre, assuming a long-term and systematic exploration of the possibilities of the human being in a performance context. The Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski was founded in 1986 in Pontedera, Italy. There, Grotowski developed a line of performance research known as «Art as vehicle» until his death in 1999. Within this investigation, he worked closely with Mr. Richards whom he called his «essential collaborator», eventually changing the name of the Workcenter to include that of Richards. During those years, Grotowski transmitted to Richards the fruit of his lifetime research, what he called «the inner aspect of the work». Theatre No Theatre, founded in February 2022 by Jessica Losilla-Hébrail, Hyun Ju Baek and Cécile Richards, long-term Workcenter members, is registered as a non-profit Cultural Association according to Italian law.
